Building The Right Way…Even When It’s Not Regulated

Building The Right Way…Even When It’s Not Regulated

Texas is the Wild West of residential construction — and here’s what that means for you.
Outside of city limits, which is where almost every custom home and barndominium gets built, Texas has virtually zero building regulations. No required third-party inspections. No mandated structural engineering. No state licensing requirement for someone to call themselves a home builder. The one real exception is septic — Texas does require permits and inspections for on-site sewage systems, and counties like Washington and Fayette administer those locally. But the rest of your home’s construction quality? That depends entirely on the builder you choose.

This is the reality in Washington County and other local counties and beyond. And it shifts the burden squarely onto you, the homeowner, to find someone genuinely qualified and trustworthy before breaking ground on the biggest investment of your life.

Why that matters more than you might think.
Building a home is more than pretty finishes, quick timelines, or the lowest bid. It’s finding a builder who understands rural land and what it takes to get from raw acreage to a finished home — driveways, drainage, utilities, subdivision requirements, and septic permitting. Someone who respects your budget and helps you make design decisions that align with real construction costs. Someone who guides the pre-construction process and captains the build with clear communication and accountability at every stage.

In a part of Texas where there often is no required safety net watching over your project, that kind of process and accountability isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s everything.

How we approach it.
Our work is built on a foundation that took a lifetime to build. Growing up around quality construction with my grandfather, the late Willie Hall, earning a Bachelor of Science in Construction, and gaining experience on international, large commercial, and aviation projects where systems, checklists, and quality control aren’t optional.

We bring those same standards to every custom home and barndominium we build in rural Central Texas. The things the county may never look at, and in most cases won’t , we check anyway. Because they’ll matter to you and your family for decades.

If you’re planning to build in Washington, Fayette, Brazos County, or the surrounding area, let’s talk about what that process looks like from the start.
